Bikepacking Journal

We rode two loaded bikes across Japan. Here's everything we learned.

Routes, gear that actually earned its weight, food worth stopping for, and the places we'd send you back to — written by the two of us who pedaled it.

Guides by Country

South Korea

South Korea

South Korea is a cyclist’s heaven. The country is heavily cycling-oriented, and almost everything is paved and ready to roll on. As you ride, you will constantly see locals gliding past, and they always seem to have a warm smile or a quick tip for the next hill or coffee stop. Transitioning here straight from Japan gave us a great contrast in rhythm, food, and terrain. This is a practical guide to the daily logistics, food, and accommodation, based on what we learned riding across the country. There is another page dedicated to our route in detail.

Bikepacking 101

Bikepacking can be a wide range of things. It's not only for experienced cyclists and also not only for people with big budgets. Here is the 101 of what we know, and we're sure there's even more out there to learn!

Japan

Japan

Bikepacking Japan is a trip of a lifetime. We spent two months cycling the country, but we met people who did as much as a year (!) along with riders who came just for a couple of weeks. Either way, when exploring on two wheels, the country reveals itself as a landscape of smooth mountain pavement, winding through silent cedar forests, only to drop you straight into the neon sensory overload of a major city. We think any way you do it will be an experience, but here are the tips and tricks we learnt along the way.
